Limitations

Alteryx Copilot has the these limitations:

  • Language Support: Alteryx Copilot supports English for both prompts and responses. It might understand prompts in various languages, but responses will be in English and might be inaccurate.

  • Alteryx Copilot can’t answer questions outside of the context of Alteryx products.

  • Alteryx Copilot can’t move, edit, or delete tools.

  • Alteryx Copilot doesn't know your data environment.

  • Alteryx Copilot might not always connect tools to one another. You might need to connect them after they’re added to the canvas.

  • In some cases, Alteryx Copilot might respond to questions unrelated to Alteryx Designer. As a reminder, Alteryx Copilot is only intended to help you build Alteryx Copilot workflows.

Limitations with Data Sampling Disabled or Using Designer Version 24.2 and Older

If you’re using Designer Desktop version 24.2 and older, or if Data Sampling is disabled, these additional limitations apply:

  • Alteryx Copilot can’t answer questions about your data. It only has access to workflow metadata.

  • Alteryx Copilot can’t run workflows or interact with the user interface beyond adding tools to the canvas.

  • Alteryx Copilot can’t see your data. It might ask you to paste a sample into the chat window so it can assist you.

  • Alteryx Copilot only uses your metadata, such as column names, if you transpose your data such that row values are used as column names, Alteryx Copilot can then use those values.

Data Privacy

Alteryx Copilot uses Google Gemini Pro to generate responses and data privacy is not guaranteed. Additionally, you can't disable Alteryx Copilot. To ensure you don't send data to Alteryx Copilot, you must uninstall Alteryx Copilot.

By default, Alteryx Copilot only has access to workflow metadata, workflow XML, and your dataset metadata. Metadata is only sent to Alteryx Copilot when you send a new prompt. To allow Alteryx Copilot to access your data for more accurate responses, turn on Data Sampling.

Important

Alteryx Copilot never uses customer data for model training.

Caution

Do not include Personally Identifiable Information (PII) or other sensitive information due to privacy concerns.

Data Sampling

Important

Data Sampling requires Designer Desktop version 2025.1 and newer and Alteryx Copilot version 4.1.2 and newer.

Turn on Data Sampling to give Alteryx Copilot permission to access data in your workflow. With access to your data, Alteryx Copilot can provide more intelligent, data-aware assistance. With Data Sampling turned off, Alteryx Copilot only has access to workflow metadata.

Note

By enabling Data Sampling, you permit Alteryx Copilot to sample data from your workflow, subject to the terms of the Alteryx End User License Agreement or other applicable agreement governing your use of Designer Desktop and Alteryx Copilot .

To turn on Data Sampling:

  1. From Alteryx Copilot, select Settings (gear icon).

  2. Under Privacy, turn on the Data Sampling toggle.

Once turned on, Data Sampling applies to all workflows you use with Alteryx Copilot. It also remains on after you restart Designer Desktop or reload Alteryx Copilot.

To turn off Data Sampling:

  1. From Alteryx Copilot, select Settings (gear icon).

  2. Under Privacy, turn off the Data Sampling toggle.

How Data Sampling Works

  • Alteryx Copilot might request a sample of data at specific tool anchors when it determines the data is necessary to respond accurately to your question.

  • Data is retrieved from the Designer Browse Everywhere YXBE file. The YXBE file is a temporary snapshot of data available at anchor points after you run a workflow. Learn more about Browse Everywhere data.

  • To configure how much data Browse Everywhere stores, go to Options > User Settings > Edit User Settings > General > Override Tool Results Settings > Memory Limit per Anchor. By default, the memory limit is capped at 1 MB per anchor.

  • For Alteryx Copilot to access data in your workflow, you must run the workflow to generate or refresh the YXBE file. If data isn’t available at the requested anchor, Alteryx Copilot might run the workflow to create or refresh the data sample.

Benefits of Data Sampling

When you turn on Data Sampling, Alteryx Copilot can…

  • Recommend more appropriate tools or configurations based on your data.

  • Suggest profiling tools to detect potential issues like nulls or outliers in your data.

  • Offer guidance on transformations such as converting data types or formatting columns.

  • Provide enhanced answers to exploratory, analytics-focused prompts where knowing column values helps define next steps.

Data Retention

Alteryx retains message history for a period of up to 2 years. Note that Preview accounts don’t have the ability to request the deletion of message history.
